500 Calories? Really?

My time in the UK is coming to an end.  Most of my posts have been about shows I've seen at The Fringe. Today, I wanted to touch upon a very serious matter and in my opinion a national conspiracy.

The Leggera Pizza from Pizza Express

I first went to a Pizza Express a few years back. It's the equivalent of a California Pizza Kitchen back in the US.  I don't ever go to California Pizza Kitchen because I live in NYC and we have loads of amazing pizza places.  Actually, the better ones are in New Jersey but that's a whole other post.  However, in Edinburgh Pizza Express is pretty decent.  Being that I am a calorie conscious eater, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they offered a 500 calorie pizza called the Leggera.  It's basically a small pizza with a hole cut in the middle that they fill with arugula (rocket).

So. Good.
So, NOT 500 calories.

A 2009 article in The Telegraph:

"The ring-shaped "Leggera" pizzas (translation: "light") have been billed as a healthy option for diners. The pizzas average 500 calories each, around 30pc fewer than a "full fat" pizza. When Pizza Express launched it earlier this year, the Leggera range was even endorsed by WeightWatchers. "It is brilliant that restaurants are giving dieters options," one slimmer told an Evening Standard journalist following the launch."

Hmm... does THIS look like an average of 500 calories?

Yup. That's pepperoni on there *and* salad dressing.

Fool me once Pizza Express, shame on me.
Fool me twice, well, I'm going there tonight in between a show so technically this will be third time.

Discuss.
